Looking for Opportunity

Looking for Opportunity:

            1)  FSMA Final Rule for Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional          Adulteration. (Regulation)
B)    What leads you to believe that this information suggests an opportunity might exist?
The new regulation to protect food against intentional adulteration will heighten consumer confidence. This regulation will help and ensure our food is not contaminated by terrorists and unhappy employees. The consumer can feel more at ease knowing the food manufacturing industry has tighter regulations. These regulations are to be enforced for both human and animal food.
C)    Prototypical Customer:
The everyday food shopper, animal care centers, and pet owners.
D)    Is the opportunity relatively easy or relatively difficult to exploit, and why do you think so?
I feel the opportunity is easy to exploit for those selling food that has gone through the regulation and mitigation strategies. Not all food industries are required to go through the same mitigation strategies so they may see a dip in sales, because of the risk factor of possibly being adulterated.
E)     Why did you see the opportunity?
I know in recent years our food has been infected and unhealthy to consume and the threat of terrorism is not something the middle east and Europe need to think about anymore. Everyone is aware of the threat and consumers can be skeptical with how they go about making their purchases and to have these regulations puts the mind at ease for a bit. I would expect sales to have an upward projection.

2)      FDA approves first implantable drug for the treatment of opioid addiction. (Trend)
B)    What leads you to believe that this information suggests an opportunity might exist?
I believe as great of idea as this new implant is the use may be too expensive and invasive. The idea is great, but there must be a better way to get the same result and ease of use without an operation or a high cost.
C)    Prototypical Customer:
Recovering drug addicts, specifically from opioids.
D)    Is the opportunity relatively easy or relatively difficult to exploit, and why do you think so? The opportunity is there and the heath society is aware of it, because how else would the implantable drug have come to be. There is a need and it is unfortunate, but we have to deal with this problem. Companies can use their resources and technological advances to come up with a better solution. The patients will be grateful for the advancement.
E)     Why did you see the opportunity?
From reading the article the feedback seemed positive, but many are still skeptical of the implantable device. Since this is the first device of this kind, there is plenty of room for improvement.

3)      Microsoft, Facebook to lay massive undersea cable. (Trend)
B)    What leads you to believe that this information suggests an opportunity might exist? Companies in Europe, especially southern Europe are in need of access to more data. Companies are using services like the cloud and need bandwidth to support the high speed customers crave. Now those customers can become more productive and reach a larger audience.
C)    Prototypical Customer:
Directly the telecommunications companies, but the companies who use the data from the cable will be the ones who benefit the most.
D)     Is the opportunity relatively easy or relatively difficult to exploit, and why do you think so? Not every company can create and send a cable across the ocean so that part will be hard to exploit outside of the tech companies and private networks. On the other hand, the customers of the service will be able to take full advantage of the increase in data capacity.
E)     Why did you see the opportunity?
The article said this is the first cable to be run to Southern Europe and that alone signals growth. The companies in those areas will be given a boost and will now have the ability to develop faster and increase their audiences.

4)      A Toolkit for Employers and Workers. (Regulation)
B)    What leads you to believe that this information suggests an opportunity might exist?
The article says that workers are suffering from illnesses and some end up dead, because companies are dealing with hazardous materials. The OSHA has implemented a check list for employers to use to minimize their use of hazardous materials. Chemical engineers can come up with safer products for companies.
C)    Prototypical Customer:
Employers of companies who deal with hazardous materials to ensure the well-being of their employees. I would say the chemical engineers of a chemical product company will have the task of creating these safer products.
D)    Is the opportunity relatively easy or relatively difficult to exploit, and why do you think so? I think the opportunity is easy to exploit. Only the chemical product companies will be developing cleaner and less harmful products for companies to use. But the companies who are using the toolkit will be looking to use the safest products available. The employees will feel safer using safer products.
E)  Why did you see the opportunity?
I saw this opportunity, because the toolkit forces the chemical companies to stop producing hazardous materials for companies. There is a responsibility for these companies to protect their employees. Because of the toolkit companies can provide a higher level of safety by using safer products.

  1. The second trend only people with really good insurance will be able to get the implant. While good in theory that is all it is, unless they find a way to make it cheap but cheap isn't always good. If they find a way to make the cost of product and labor cheap, I would have to wonder how effective is the treatment.

  2. Hello, It is interesting article. I totally agree with you thinking. The article 'Microsoft, Facebook to lay massive undersea cable'is good to discuss. I also think that Microsoft or Facebook companies will be given a boost and will now have the ability to develop faster and increase their audiences. 3. Hey Marco
I found your articles very interesting and I am happy I came across them. The most interesting article is Facebook and Microsoft laying undersea cable. I think this is a demonstration of how much companies are willing to speed up bandwidth and are willing to do anything to get a leg up on the competition. This just shows how much these companies are growing, and it will be interesting to see what their competition will do about this. Keep up the great work!

  4. Marco,

Interesting responses, and great effort. One question I do want to ask you is for the first opportunity how would you specifically exploit the unmet need. I just think it would be useful and could open up other opportunities. Otherwise, I thought the article about the massive sea cable was really interesting and I believe there is absolutely an opportunity that can be exploited there, which is why I think it is a smart move Microsoft and Facebook.
